KCnet Configuration Settings

Windows 95

Windows 95 has a built-in TCP/IP stack and dialer called Dial Up Networking.  If you have Windows 95, we recommend you use Dial Up Networking to connect to the Internet.  It is not recommended that you use any Windows 3.x applications for establishing the winsock connection.

There are two primary methods of configuring Window 95.  Most Windows 95 installations will have available a wizard called "Internet Setup Wizard" or "Get Connected".   Generally if you have Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0 or earlier, you will have the "Internet Setup Wizard".  If you have MSIE 3.0 or higher, you will have the "Get Connected Wizard".  If you don't have the wizard, then you will need to configure your computer manually.

Using the wizard the configuration process is just a simple matter of completing a few screens.  To see if you have a wizard, click the Start Button on your Win95 task bar.  Then select Programs | Accessories.  Look for a category called Internet Tools.  If you have Internet Tools, you should see one of the wizards.

Automatic Configuration Using the Wizard

Before starting, make sure your Windows 95 installation diskettes or CD are nearby.  You may be asked to insert them.

Note:  The following instructions assume you already have an installed modem that is working properly.

Click the Start Button.  Then select Programs | Accessories | Internet Tools.  Select the Wizard available on your machine.  Then complete the screens according to the following  Wizard Screen Shots

Manual Configuration Without the Wizard

Windows 95 can be configured manually although it takes more time and effort than using the wizards.  The manual process can be broken down into 3 major steps.  First, you'll need to ensure Dial-Up Networking is installed on your pc.  If it isn't, you'll need to manually install it.  Second, once Dial-Up Networking is present, you'll need to create a connection called KCnet.  Finally, you'll need to ensure the TCP/IP protocol is installed as one of your network protocols.  Please follow these steps in order and refer to the screen shots after each section.
