Web Page
Publishing with FTP
Now that
you have completed designing your web page, the next step is to get your
page onto the Web. Whether you are preparing to upload your personal
(non-commercial) home page, which is included with your personal dialup
account or are publishing your business web site, this section will get
you started.
If you
will be uploading your site with an FTP program such as CuteFTP or
FETCH, select the appropriate link below:
If you still have
questions, please visit our
Frequently Asked
Questions section .
Included with your
personal dialup account is web site space on our server for your
personal (non-commercial) web page. We ask that all pages posted in the
personal area be non-commercial and presentable to the general public.
We reserve the right to remove a home page that doesn't comply with our
policy. For more information on our policies at KCnet, please review
our Terms of Service.
The standard personal
home page included with your account is hosted on a Unix based web
server which does not support Microsoft® FrontPage® 2000 extensions,
although you may still use FrontPage for creating and publishing your
web site to your standard home page. Please refer to the Microsoft
article
Using FrontPage without the Server Extensions for a discussion on
which FrontPage elements to avoid.
If the additional
FrontPage features are required, we offer a personal home page upgrade
for $2/month on a Windows NT server which includes the latest FrontPage
extensions. For help with publishing to your personal home page with
FrontPage please visit our
FrontPage help section.
If you are interested
in publishing a commercial page, please contact our
staff for assistance in acquiring a
commercial site.
Once your pages are
created, you will need to upload them to our web server. You will more
than likely need an FTP client. For Windows 3.x and Win95/NT users, we
recommend CuteFTP. For the
Macintosh, try either
Fetch or Anarchie. Using an FTP client, you will need to connect
to our FTP server, ftp.kcnet.com, and login with your username and
password. Once connected your current directory location will default
to /username. This is the directory that is setup to hold your web
files. Make sure you are publishing to this directory by leaving the
'Initial Remote Directory' box within CuteFTP blank. Refer to the
CuteFTP example.

Many of the new HTML
editors like Netscape Gold and Composer have built-in publishing
functionality. This allows one to create and publish from the same
program. If you use one of these programs, you will probably be asked
for a View (browse) location and a Publish location. The View location
is just the address of your web site, http://www.kcnet.com/~username.
The Publish location is
the location of our FTP server and the path to your home directory,
ftp://ftp.kcnet.com/username. Refer to the Netscape Gold and Netscape
Composer examples.

Uploading Commercial Web Sites
http://www.kcnet.com/mycompany or http://www.mycompany.com
There are several ways
to upload or publish your files to the web server. One easy method is
using an ftp client such as CuteFTP or Fetch. When copying files with
ftp, you will need to know the server name and the directory path of the
target location where you intend to put your files along with your valid
username and password.
These instructions are
for publishing a commercial web site on a KCnet's UNIX web servers.
- If your web site
is a kcnet.com domain web site with a URL such as:
http://www.kcnet.com/mycompany
then the server
name will be www.kcnet.com
- If your web site
is a virtual host site (your own domain name) with a URL such as:
http://www.mycompany.com
then the server
name will be www.mycompany.com
if you have
multiple virtual sites hosted with KCnet using the same username and
password, once logged into the server you will need to change
directories to:
/mycompany.com
If your commercial web
site is hosted on one of KCnet's NT web servers with FrontPage access,
you should publish your site with FrontPage, if you need assistance
please visit our
FrontPage help section. By default, NT hosted sites do not come
with FTP access enabled. If you require FTP access, please
contact one of our
tech support representatives to setup this option.
- If your web site
is a kcnet.com domain web site with a URL such as:
http://www.kcnet.com/mycompany
then, for security
reasons, you will not be able to access your site via FTP.
- If your web site
is a virtual host site (your own domain name) with a URL such as:
http://www.mycompany.com
then the server
name will be www.mycompany.com and the initial remote directory path
will be:
/mycompany.com
